Understanding Net Revenue Retention (NRR)
NRR = (Starting ARR + Expansion - Contraction - Churn) / Starting ARR × 100%

What it means: NRR measures the percentage of recurring revenue retained from existing customers over a period, including expansions and losses. It excludes new customer revenue.

Interpretation:

  • >100%: You're growing revenue from existing customers (ideal for SaaS)
  • 100%: Breaking even - expansions offset churn and contraction
  • <100%: Losing revenue from existing customers

Note: NRR is typically calculated over a 12-month period. Best-in-class SaaS companies often achieve 120%+ NRR.
